Light, time, and sensation become abstraction – a visual metaphor for how fleeting individual moments and movements give rise to larger social rhythms and collective structure.
A Journey in Motion is a photographic series inspired by Brownian motion, the random, jittery movement of particles suspended in fluid, whether liquid or gas. A foundational concept in physics, it helps define mass and the elemental structure of matter. Though invisible to the naked eye, each particle vibrates constantly, nudged by collisions with other particles around it.
These restless movements offered early proof of atoms, laid the groundwork for kinetic theory, and revealed how order can emerge from chaos – through accumulation, through chance.
This series transforms that insight into visual form. Each piece was captured from long-exposure videos of traffic on a road in Singapore. The vehicles – cars, bikes, buses – become lines and irregular orbs of light, weaving through space. They are not staged; their journeys are spontaneous, flowing with the rhythm of the city.
They were digitally abstracted and reworked into painterly frames. A transformation of light into colour, motion into emotion.
This work asks: how does structure emerge? How are systems created? Brownian motion suggests that the building blocks of our world are constantly in motion, even if we can't see it. From instability, structure arises. Each shift, each individual action from each person however small, or unintended, contributes to a greater whole.
In a world obsessed with control, A Journey in Motion honours the value of uncertainty, and the impressions that we leave on each other. It suggests that imperfection, pause, and chance are not obstacles, but elements of design. We are not static beings. Momentary encounters set off a causal chain reaction. Even when we feel disconnected or derailed, our lives are in flow. Colliding, separating, redirecting, becoming.
To move at all is to become part of a living system, and a continual unfolding. Fluid, open-ended, and always in motion.
